We don’t like to think that everything we do is about preparing children for school, but in fact in always working towards children’s next stage of development. We are always ensuring we meet and exceed the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum by delivering our own unique curriculum covering Performing and Visual Arts, Sport, Early Years and Discovery, so we are preparing children for school and for life.
Good early education is aimed to make sure children grow and develop at their own pace, are healthy, secure and safe and always supports children preparing for their next step, including going to school. At The Winchmore Hill Preschool, we develop individualised plans for each child to foster their development based on their own needs, talents, abilities, and interests, always bearing in mind their future readiness for school.
School preparedness includes all of the following:
We aim to develop self-confidence, self-belief and independence. We encourage and nurture independence from a young age so that children learn to feed themselves, pour their drinks, make food and other choices and learn to dress themselves. They learn to follow instructions, take turns and share, sit for periods of time and work on their concentration and other key life skills.
We also introduce children to letters and sounds so that they can recognise letters, their names and some keywords. Those that are able, might be able to read words and sentences. We teach children to write letters and words such as their names. At The Winchmore Hill Preschool, children learn to recognise numerals, to count and to do simple addition and subtraction using real objects in daily routines and in play-based activities. They are introduced to the language of size and shape.
We provide interesting opportunities and exciting resources for children to Explore | Discover | Create | Learn. Children use state of the art ICT resources to build skills.
